October Love

October is my favorite month of the year (and none of our birthdays happen to be this particular month — though Sebastian was supposed to be born on 10/02/13).  From fall running/racing to endless hayrides and pumpkin patches, October is by far the best month ever.  And because you all know I’m a big planner,  I made sure to plan for some great fall activities.

Recap of what we’ve done so far:

1. Okay, this doesn’t count for October because it was 9/29, but we attended Lili’s paint monthly paint night with her school.  We love going.

Too much fun with the little folks.

2. B came with  me to the office one day and he was totally good.

3. We had a 4-day weekend for the Jewish holidays and Lili started the day off with yoga at the library. (10/01/16).

While she did yoga, P and Sebastian hung out on the story-time rug.

4. Monday (10/3), I took the kids to a pumpkin patch right down the street.

And when we came home, I made dinner while they painted said pumpkins.

B went down for a nap and then we started baking Halloween cookies.  He woke up in the middle of our bake-off.

And then we went to the library (yes, all the same day).

Lili read a book to Connor and she did fantastic.

and then we came home.

5.The kids had another day off but I didn’t so I needed to take off (10/4).  Of course Lili wanted to know what our plans were for the day. So we went to another pumpkin patch down the street.

And we are trying to practice B’s smile.

After we picked more pumpkins, we stopped at Target to pick up a few things and then we headed home to paint the pumpkins. HA.

Told you, we are trying to get this smile down.

We also finished up our bats and hung them up.

6.  On Friday, I picked up Mimi’s brother and we headed into the city to pick our bibs for Brooklyn Rock N Roll Half Marathon.  We took the train from my office and it went pretty smooth.

After we picked up our bibs, we had time to stop over Time Square. Every single time he visits, he has to take an obligatory Time Square photo.

We had to catch the 12:46 train back in order for me to get the kids from school so we were pretty pressed for time but he was happy to get his pic in.

After I picked the kids up, we dropped off Ralph and came home to eat a quick dinner before heading to Pump it Up with some friends.

Kids had a ton of fun.  After pump it up, we had to run over to the super market and then we were home by 8PM. Ugh. I still had to give a kids a bath, put them down and then lay out race clothes.

I was in bed by 11 PM, later than I like to be before a race.

6. 10/08/16 RACE DAY!  I woke up quarter to 5 and ate breakfast.  My brother scooped me up by 5:50 AM and he drove us into Brooklyn.  Quick sidenote: as we are getting dropped off, Ralph realizes he left his BIB at HOME!!! Oh my GOD. I thought he was going to have a hard time getting in but it all worked out.

I pretty much paced him. He wanted to come in around 2:25-2:20.

It was a good time. I know he was hurting towards the end but we pushed through and came in at 2:22 AND not only was he thrilled but he had a PR.

Our siblings had awesome signs for us.

Then we had to walk 2-miles back to the car. HA! But it wasn’t bad. We were home before noon and I showered and put B down for a nap.  Then I made an early dinner and we carved pumpkins in the evening.

Isn’t it pretty? The kids got a little bored of cleaning out of pumpkins part, so I had them make construction paper pumpkins on the side.

7.  Columbus Day I had to work but kids had off (10/10/16) but I promised them that once I picked up kids I would take them to Kidz Village.

They had a blast and didn’t give me hard time when it was time to leave.  Probably because they were about to close their doors.

8.  I was swamped at the office on Tuesday so my sister in law was able to pick up Lili from school and take her out before dropping her off at my office.

They had fun together.

9.  I was OFF yesterday (10/12/16) for the Jewish holiday and so were the kids so guess what we did??? We met up with my soley, Cici, for a track workout (tomorrow happens to be our 4 year runniversary).  Did I tell you she’s 22-weeks pregnant???

We were dripping post workout.  I didn’t have a sitter, so I made sure to pack their bag and was praying that the field wouldn’t be packed and lucky us… hardly anyone at the track!!! I love when that happens.

They would occasionally join me for half a lap.

I can’t take their cuteness.  And can I tell you how stinkin’ cute Lili would be when I was doing a recovery lap?

She would bring water for me on the side. I swear I felt like I was an elite runner. HA! When we said our goodbyes to Cici, we headed over to look for Halloween costumes for Lili.  We already ordered Sebastian’s.

We were there for awhile trying on costumes and then she finally picked up. I’ll have the winner posted soon.

When we came home I had to cook lunch, prep dinner, put B down for a nap, do laundry and then we did more Halloween arts/crafts.

What a great time we had, especially making these puppets.

10.  Saying goodbye.  While in the midst of cooking lunch, prepping dinner, doing laundry, feeding kids, etc. Mimi and her brother stopped by to say bye to the kids.

Next time we’ll see him is when we head out to San Francisco for my brother and his sister’s wedding.

Do you dress up for Halloween? Do you do Halloween races? I signed up for a 5k and a half marathon this Spring. I am thinking of a Spring marathon but haven’t really been looking around.

Did you ever run a Rock N Roll series? Brooklyn was my first. It was nice. Not too overcrowded.  The medals are actually REALLY nice.

I’m not in tomorrow so hope you all have a wonderful weekend!!!

Hey Spring

Workout: Strength  + Track Workout

Happy days are here when you open up the weather app and see that the next few days are filled with sunshine!!!

This really is the most perfect weather for running. First, I did a kettlebell workout.

Sebastian placed his Incredible Hulk action figure next to my mat. HA! It was a good workout and I burned 234 calories.

Cici met up at 11AM and we ran to the high school track (1-mile) and did some 400s.  So glad that I got to see her again.

Except my expression is just really weird looking.

Tonight P has a friend coming over so I had to pick up a few things at Trader Joe’s.  We’re watching the last game of the season Nets v. Knicks.

Do you use a heart rate monitor? Which one? Do you love it?

I had one with my first Garmin but you had to strap it onto your chest and I would chafe with that so I stopped wearing it.  Celeste was trying to keep her heart rate low but she doesn’t wear a monitor. She goes by the “talk test”.  If you can carry a conversation while running, then you’re not really pushing it too hard.

NYCM Training Has Begun (and Updates)…

So we’re trying this NYC Marathon training one more time. I’m not sure if you all know by now, but I finally got in after signing up in 2009 (that’s 6 years ago). NYC used to do the 3-strikes and you’re in (they rid that option recently). So after three (3) consecutive years of not getting into NYC, I was finally accepted in 2012. Unfortunately, that was the year of Hurricane Sandy and they canceled the marathon. We had options to run in either 2013, 2014 or 2015. I chose 2014 because I knew I wanted to try for baby #2 in 2013. Then, if you remember, I rolled my ankle on an apple during a long run one month before the race, fortunately I was able to DEFER and, well… here we are. Training for NYC. Let’s hope it happens this time.

After tweaking my training plan, I packed clothes for a track workout.

Either I am out of shape or I forgot how brutal summer running could be, but just 4x400s were TOUGH. BUT, I am glad that at least the first track workout of the training season is DONE and DONE.

Quick weekend update (or so I say — but lately it seems that I can only update once a week).

On Friday, my first day off with both kids, I ran some errands. We had a bunch of things to do. It was kind of gloomy out, and all of a sudden chilly. I ended up doing fun activities indoors with the kids.

The “after” drawings came out good but I forgot to take actual pictures. Lili did a fantastic job coloring hers and her brother’s bodies in.

Saturday was P’s birthday! 🙂 We had noon lunch with his parents and then they stopped by for a bit to open more presents. When they left, both kids napped and then we headed over to the mall for Lili’s first movie experience.

06.27.15 Inside Out

I totally cried (then again, I cry over every movie). After the movie, we headed home and just hung around.

Sunday, I woke up feeling feverish. I somehow got up anyway and started to prepare Lili’s summer school work. I know it sounds so silly but she needs to keep up with her writing and reading. Her Pre-K-3 teacher told me to keep on doing whatever we’re doing at home during the summer.

Summer Home School

She complains at first, “Awwww man…”. But once she gets into it, she’s all into it. I did make sure to have at least one fun arts and crafts after doing some school work.

The rest of the afternoon was pretty much me resting. I did feel out of it and napped with the kids too at one point. Then I made dinner and we called it a night.

Monday morning was quite busy. Lili was having blood drawn. We figured since it would be a good idea — just because she’s been getting sick a lot lately and it’s recommended when they turn 4. I was nervous about it so I had P come with me. The first thing they told me was to collect urine in a cup. Cute conversation between her and I in the bathroom.

Me: Okay, sit on the potty and I’m going to catch your pee in the cup.

Lili: Oh mommy. I can’t. I can’t pee in a cup. I don’t want to drink my pee!

Me: No honey. You don’t have to drink your pee. It’s for them to make sure your pee is okay!

When it was time to have blood drawn, she got nervous. P did an awesome job keeping her distracted and we made sure to make sure she didn’t look at the needle or the blood. She whimpered a little but then was completely fine. The med-tech even complimented us by saying how awesome we were on keeping her calm. I can imagine many kids come in there screaming. I was NERVOUS all Sunday evening. After the appointment, she came to work with me. And yes, she did an hour and a half of school work.

After, I had to do some actual work — and then I went into the back to workout. It was a strength training day.

My photographer, Lili, took my pre-workout pic.

She watched Power Rangers while watching me workout.

Then it was time to go. It was a long day but I can't complain. She was PERFECT the entire time. We picked up her brother, who was enjoying the day with their cousin.

Happy Hour

And then I helped my mom move some furniture around. I was home rather late but thank goodness my dad gave me leftovers. I didn’t have to cook for P.

I can’t believe it’s already JULY tomorrow!!!! What’s everyone doing for the weekend? Off on Friday???

Windy Wednesday

Happy April Fools Day! Someone at the office got fooled today.

april fools

Someone took their time on their lunch break. Unlike myself, I used my lunch break to hit the track. Although it was crazy windy out, I am happy that the track is cleaned off and there is NO snow on it.

I was also happy that the track was EMPTY. The high school kids didn’t even come out at lunch. I am lucky the track is a mile away. So I did my warm-up (1-mile), dynamic stretches, then 5x400s with 400 recovery in between. Cool-down was my 1-mile back to the office. And there you have it, a 5-mile workout at lunch time.

Then I came back to this waiting for me on my desk.

with a side of sweet potato fries that didn’t make it to the camera — I devoured them. HA.

Anybody get fooled today? or did you pull a prank?

It’s My Thursday!

6:00 PM: Strength/Core – PENDING

If you forgot, I’m off on Fridays! So I’m doing a happy dance in my swivel chair while sipping on my pumpkin coffee from Dunkin Donuts. Anyway, yesterday was a great day, well except I had a headache most of the day and was EXHAUSTED! I am pretty sure I yawned several times. By it was great because…

– The big boss wasn’t in until after 12 and out of the office by 12:50.
– My boss was out of the office by 2. I pumped and geared up. Quick fun fact: 90% of the time, my socks don’t match.

Mismatched Socks

Mismatched Socks

Fortunately, it doesn’t interfere with my running game, and I mean, nobody knows but me.

Pre-Run Selfie

Pre-Run Selfie

The girl at the firm next door (we share bathrooms) brought a mirror in to hang in our newly renovated bathroom. We’re both short so we can’t see below our necks in the mirror that they have. It’s not the most flattering mirrors, but it does its job.

-Cici was outside by 3:10 and we headed out for our track workout. I pretty much remembered the plan because I was calculating it in my head — but it was a new workout so we didn’t want to mess it up.

Hittin' the Track

Rolling Hills 800s

We were to do this workout 2-3x. So, we warmed-up with a mile run to the track. Did our dynamic stretches and then we were off with the first 800. The 5k pace that Cici calculated was a 7:30. Each 800 should be finished at 3:45. We did the first 800 @ 3:38, recovered for 200m, then a 400 @1:34 (mine was 4 seconds later). Then a recovery. HOLY SH*T. I was winded after the first repeat. We recovered, then did our next 800 @ 3:42, recovered for 200m (or a little longer this time around) and then a 400 @ 1:41 (3 seconds later for me). By the time we recovered, I told Cici I didn’t think I could do one more right now. I thought I was going to vomit. HAHAHA. I told her to go ahead, but she said we were scheduled for 2-3 repeats and we did our 2 so we are good. We ran back to the office for our cool down. OUCH.

Post -Track Workout

Post -Track Workout

– No, we don’t always wear make-up on runs. HAHA, Especially track workouts. We were both at work, so we came done up. Cici and I parted ways and I went back into the office to cool down and get dressed… OH and put this bad boy on.

-I use men’s deodorants ALL.THE.TIME! Not only does it smell good, (TRUE STORY: I SNIFF PEDRO’S AND MY ARMPITS WHEN DEGREE IS ON) but it lasts way longer than women’s deodorant, IMO.

Mismatched socks? Does it happen to you?

What deodorant do you use?

I’m looking forward to my weekend. Tomorrow I’m doing a tempo run, Saturday is a long run, paint night, dinners, dance class, church, and then it will be Monday again. 😦 But let’s not think about it.

The Tradeoff

11:00 AM: 5-miles Run (5k speed work) – COMPLETED

I need to get back into the habit of working out in the morning. It’s been tough with a new fall schedule. Two days a week, my in-laws can pick up Lili. P does drop-off, while I do pick-up. While we did sign up for after-care, I’m thinking of canceling it because I don’t want to have Lili stay later than she has to at school. Unfortunately, this week was a little off because my in-laws took a last minute trip to Niagra Falls and so I had to pick her up Monday and Tuesday. I am truly lucky to work in an awesome office that doesn’t mind me bringing my daughter back for two hours. It takes me an hour and 10-15 minutes to pick her up and come back to the office and honestly, I love having her here.

My Funny Face

My Funny Face

She is so awesome. She works quietly, watches a movie, eats her snacks, helps me work, etc. Everyone enjoys having her here.

Time to go HOME!

Time to go HOME!

On days that I will have to pick her up means that I won’t be able to run at lunch. As much as I love the fall weather, I’d take seeing the look on sweet Lili’s face over a run at lunch. She is ecstatic to see me when I pick her up from school. It’s a tradeoff but Lili takes the CAKE!

Shhh... I'm watching a movie.

Shhh… I’m watching a movie.

What does this all mean? Well, it means I have to either (1) get up early and workout or (2) workout at night. I’m more of a morning person when it comes to working out — GOD bless your souls for those that workout at night. It’s HARD!!! On Monday night, I ended up working out after 9PM.

Monday Night Football + Monday Night Workout

Monday Night Football + Monday Night Workout

Baby only woke up once during that workout. Yesterday, Cici and I discussed our future running plans — we get so excited when we discuss anything related to running. We even spoke to Coach and he gave us our options. After looking at it, we were scheduled for a Tuesday Track Workout. I had to pick up Lili so no lunch workout, but I changed with intentions of getting my track workout on the tread. It did not work out that way — oh well. So I knew I would have to workout at some point today and thank goodness, my in-laws are back so they said they would scoop up Lili. As much as she begged for me to pick her up today and as much as I will miss her cute face, I was excited to get my TRACK workout IN!!!!

(The sheet below is actually the cheat sheet for treadmills, which originally I was going to do). We did a 5k speed workout, so actually it worked out better that it wasn’t on a treadmill. I think that would be way too boring. So I was happy it was on the track. I actually called the high school track (1-mile from my job) to see if it was okay to run on during school hours. While “Forgiveness is better than obtaining permission” — I would much rather just be safe than sorry. The athletics department gave me the OKAY! So I headed out at 11am. Here’s what it looked like:

1-mile WU (run to the track 9:45 min/mi)

5k Breakdown:
Mile 1 @ 7:55 min/mi
Mile 2 @ 7:50 min/mi
Mile 3 @ 7:55
.10 @ .27

1-Mile CD (run back to the office 10:00 min/mi)

Celeste had an amazing speed workout yesterday. We were very close but shined out with a 23:17 5k (and that’s just practice).

And there you have it. I was excited about it and am excited to run with Celeste! We are starting to feel like we’re coming back with our speed and ready to utilize Coach Vinny’s training plans!!!

What are your future running goals?
While mine is to be faster, I’m just trying to really get to where I was pre-pregnancy. I felt like I was at my fittest and fastest, but I think know I could be faster. Cici thinks I don’t give myself enough credit. She is right!!!

Okay, I’ll be waiting for Lili to call me in a few to tell me how her day went. Just a quick update: She only cried on her first day and yesterday, her teacher said she’s starting to be more vocal AND she is talking in full complete sentences whereas the other children don’t yet. How amazing is that??? I’m so proud of her. 🙂

Happy Wednesday.

Burning Some Rubber, and not our Dinner

7:00 AM: Push Circuit 3 + ABS – COMPLETED

12:00 PM: 3-Mile Recovery Run (Avg. Pace 9:04 min/mi) – COMPLETED

Yesterday was my sister’s first track workout, ever. She has never done speed work in her life. She did well, considering that she ate two lunches and had three cigarettes. Yes, unfortunately she is a smoker but she is trying to quit and has already cut down. Celeste and I followed her schedule — which wasn’t so bad at all. We were able to hold conversations for most of the time.

Post Work-Out (can you tell? What's up with my hair?)

Post Work-Out (can you tell? What’s up with my hair?)

I scooped up Lili and ate leftovers while waiting for P to get home. He recently got promoted to Manager and is now working later than usual. Poor guy. I’ve been trying to have dinner ready or something on the table. I’ve finally perfected my Chicken Paella.

chicken paella

While this was cooking, I was preparing the next day’s meal. Chicken Thighs (and drumsticks) with carrots and potatoes in the slow cooker.

I got the recipe here and it tasted good and was able to prep everything the night before, that way, all I had to do was take it out of the fridge and put the timer on.

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner.

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner.

· 1 medium onion
· 4 medium-size new potatoes
· 2 cups baby carrots
· 1/4 cup chicken broth
· 1/4 cup dry white wine or chicken broth
· 1 teaspoon minced garlic
· 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
· 1 1/4 teaspoons salt, divided
· 1/2 teaspoon pepper, divided
· 1 teaspoon paprika
· 6 skinned, bone-in chicken thighs (I did 3 chicken thighs and 3 drumsticks)

1. Halve onion lengthwise, and cut into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Cut potatoes into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Place onion in a lightly greased 6-qt. slow cooker; top with potatoes and carrots.

2. Combine broth, next 3 ingredients, 3/4 tsp. salt, and 1/4 tsp. pepper. Pour over vegetables.

3. Combine paprika and remaining 1/2 tsp. salt and 1/4 tsp. pepper; rub over chicken. Arrange chicken on top of vegetables.

4. Cover and cook on LOW 6 hours or until chicken is done and vegetables are tender.

I liked it a lot. The husband, he preferred the Whole Chicken in the slow cooker instead. Perhaps I will toy around with the spices and see how I can make it better for his palate.

Anyhow, I did a very short recovery run today. I was planning on it being more 4-5 miles but then I realized I needed to stop at the store to pick up a few things for my sister’s birthday. So I ended up my run next door to my job so I could do a quick shop and not be so sweaty.

Do you ever run/workout at lunch but don’t have a shower at the job?

If you have somewhere important to go after work and workout at lunch, do you try not to workout as hard?

I was able to cool down a ton while shopping so I don’t smell terribly and/or look like I ran. It’s a blessing what make-up can do for you. 😉

It’s almost FRIDAY! Can you feel my excitement?
